Carbon Offsets
Written by Gordon Fong

ImageI generally get the Independent newspaper on a Saturday and in their holiday and travel reviews they usually have a oneliner about a carbon offset for the journey.

Thought I would dig a little bit further and understand it more. In a nutshell taking a flight has an environmental impact, on greenhouse gases and so on, so they are charties and organisations that you can donate to, in relation to the journey you have made. They then take the proceeds and fund environmental projects designed to tackle those issues.

One such organisation is Climate Care , who  have a handy calculator to work out the offset in pounds for you.

I have to admit that I have not used it yet, as it is only recently I have become aware.

The airlines could do something useful and pass on some of those so-called "extra" fees they seem to add to the base cost of a flight onto these kind of channels.

DEFRA has a press release from September last year on this about British Airways's Carbon Offset scheme.
