Need champagne for Xmas?
Written by Gordon Fong
Saturday, 02 December 2006

I just had delivery of a shipment from Majestic Wines the other day. Vintage champagne for £15 each which is 50% off. I got a couple of bottles each of Duval-Leroy, Heidsieck Gold Top and Nicolas Feuillatte.

As vintage Champagne they are well worth their price at £15. 50% discount is always a good deal, which does come around regularly with Majestic and hopefully it will continue to do so.

Forget about the hoo-ha about the Thresher vouchers , just click onto the Majestic web site and get some bargains all year round.

Wagamama coming to Bournemouth
Written by Gordon Fong
Saturday, 02 December 2006
I spotted that Wagamama are coming to Bournemouth down on Westover Road, just up from Hot Wok incidentally so a bit of competition there. Actually probably not competition as Wagamama will be ahead in terms of quality, if the franchise maintains its strict standards.

The food and the menu is pretty mainstream but it does what it needs to do.

Red sky at night, Shepherds Pie
Written by Gordon Fong

Red sky in morning, Cottage Pie.

I thought I would just quickly list the differences between similar recipes or sounding dishes as they are sometimes the centre of frivolous office debate.

Shepherd's Pie - only made from lamb or mutton eg the meat comes from a sheep
Cottage Pie - made with mince or any other meat

Quiche - mainly egg or cheese based and savoury. Pastry based.
Flan - more custard or souffle based. Can be sweet or savoury. Can be sponge or pastry based.

London: Ikkyusan, Chinatown
Written by Gordon Fong

39 Gerrard Street, London W1D 5QD. Tel: 020 7434 0899

This is situated half way along Chinatown. I was given this as a recommendation from someone who had found my fong.co.uk web site about other restaurants.

This place brings Japanese, Chinese and Thai cuisine together. Very handy if you have a group of people who like sushi, noodles, dim sum and spicy Thai food but maybe not all liking the same thing. There seems to be something for everyone.

On the sauce guides
Written by Gordon Fong
Saturday, 25 November 2006

Do you want to know what to drink, the best bottles, cocktail recipes and a bit of history? These people, Diffords Guide formerly known as Sauce Guide, do fantastic thick magazine-type publications that are stylish, informative, comprehensive and witty.

They are fit enough to grace any discerning cofffee table or bookshelf. I tend to only find them at outlets such as Borders that have a more eclectic range of publications.

Nothing about wine in these things though. Just the hard stuff.
