English food worth eating. Overall a great place to relax and eat well.
16 Buckingham Palace Road, London, SW1W 0QP
This is a most unusual place to eat. It has existed on this site for over 50 years. I have been here many times and recommended it to many friends and no one has a bad word to say about it. Yet it remains a very quiet and low key restaurant. Externally – the red, very old looking frontage makes you want to ‘walk on by’. But once inside the décor and layout is very modern and clean. The ground floor seats about 10 well spaced out tables. Only on one of my most recent visits in September 2006 was there more than half the covers in use. The few local theatres probably keep the place busy early evenings, but later on it can be very quiet - but is a really nice and relaxing way. Lunch time seems to attract a regular medley of business clientele looking to close a deal or two. The menu is brief but the food is always to a high standard and well presented. There is something on the menu for everyone. The food is mainly ‘traditional English’ but with quality. I can recommend the whitebait for starter followed by the fish and chips. Vegetarians will love the vegetable yorkshire pudding. The wine list is very impressive and service just right. Overall a great place to relax and eat well. On my last visit we had a meal for four with beers, wine, etc. all for less than £115. 16 Buckingham Palace Road, London, SW1W 0QP. They have a website - but don't let that put you off.
