Japanese Sushi
Sushi
Well my lovely wife Angela was a bit down seeing as Royal Bournemouth Hospital have decided to close her ward down that she has been running for the past few year. So, I took her to Funki Sushi in Bournemouth to cheer her up.

The place is on the rooftop floor of 20 Exeter Road, Bournemouth BH2 5AQ, just above Klute. Tel: 01202 252 533.

For those people who think that 15 minutes after you have had a Oriental meal then you feel hungry again, well you just haven't ordered enough, fools.

We had a nice bottle of Chilean Sauvignon Blanc which I think turn out to be £11.50. I got a bit confused by the whole ordering of wine as I chose one from the list to be told the only Savignon was Blah Blah, but that wasn't even on the menu and hence I didn't know what I agreed to. It could well have been a £29 bottle.

Anyway, we ordered a few bits, well OK we ordered Edamame which are great peas in the pod although these were a bit blander than I have had elsewhere. Also we had the prawn tempura with vegetables. When the menu said three prawns I thought OK not too bad as they are usual quite big, but it also came with quite a lot of courgettes and aubergine thick long strips which were crispy on the outside and nice and soft on the inside. I thought it was great value afterwards. We had seared beef sashimi, always a favourite and a speciality of Funki Sushi. Then there was deep fried baby squid (heads) and Pad Thai.

The restaurant has diversified its menu to include Thai and Chinese items. It makes it better I suppose. As a Japanese restaurant it was never as authentic as I would have liked but more eclectic. No ramen soup noodles here.

We had also ordered the soft crab shell sushi, but it never came. I just thought it was because there was no room on the table, but on checking it never got done. That was a good job. We were stuffed and were thankful. Obviously it got taken off then bill which ended up being £50 for two including a bottle of wine.

Overall I like it. Different to anything else in Bournemouth and since the closing of Tokyo Sushi, which did more traditional food, this is just about the only place to get anything remotely Japanese. Come on Bournemouth, there are loads of Japanese students visiting to learn English at the language schools. Do something about it.
